Hi topone,

To adopt a pet, you may check out the Adoption Section regularly as new pets are being put up for adoption every other day.

Waiting for a pure-breed cat will definitely require some patience but adopting a cat to give it a 2nd chance in life is more meaningful and goes alot in imparting values to children. You may consider the cats and kittens currently available for adoption too.

Guinea Pigs' Health & Diet » [URGENT!] Price and location of sterilising a guinea pig Jan 16, 2012 12:42 PM (Total replies: 2)
Hi there,

You can try Dr. Cathy Chan from The Animal Doctors at Ang Mo Kio. However, Dr. Chan only does sterilization for male guinea pigs. Actually, this is also sufficient since no breeding will occur if the male is sterilized. You don't have to sertilize both.

But if you're also looking at sterilizing the female, Dr. Cathy Chan will refer you to Dr. Hsu from The Animal Clinic at Lorong L Telok Kurau. He is very experienced and did a good sterilization job on my senior guinea pig when it was 5 years old. My guinea pig is still well and healthy today. There's no scar from the sterilization too.

Diseases, Health and Diet » Anything lacking in the care of my terrapins? Nov 30, 2011 03:13 PM (Total replies: 1)
Hi Ethel,

I see you're doing a good job caring for your 2 terrapins.

What you've given them is very good. And yes, in Singapore, you won't need to buy any UV light if your terrapins access to direct sunlight, especially the afternoon sun. Just make sure that your terrapins have dry areas to climb onto to bask themselves under the sun.

For terrapin food, Nutrafin and Mazuri are good turtle foods that you can feed your terrapins. (Nurtrafin in available in most petshops. Mazuri is a premium turlte food that can only be bought from a veterinary clinic in Jalan Kayu as they are the only distributor for it.)

Generally, if you are already feeding your terrapins quality terrapin food, there is no need to feed any additional vitamins or calcium blocks.

If your terrapins have reached a certain size, you may buy small fishes for them to feed too. Terrapins will catch the fishes, espcially at night, when the fishes are asleep.

As for the different in sizes, female terrapins are substantially larger than male terrapins and this will become more apparent as they grow up. Male terrapins are also noted for their longer, more prominent tail and longer nails.

Events, Gatherings, Outings » RED DOG - Screening in Golden Village Cinemas from 20th Oct 2011 Oct 11, 2011 11:03 AM (Total replies: 2)

Production Notes

“This is a life enhancing film about a very important part of our lives: belonging somewhere and being part of something. I think that’s a very important theme, an eternal one and a perennial one that will never go out of fashion. So I hope this film will become an evergreen. I hope that it keeps on breathing and living because it is borne from a story - a folk tale - that has lived for 30 years, and I hope that the film continues that tale.”
~ Kriv Stenders, Director

As a kid, I had heard the amazing stories of how Red Dog brought together the Pilbara community. I often think - how amazing - that one, ordinary dog, could have united so many people. Yet here we are, so many years later, and that ordinary dog has somehow inspired a new community of filmmakers to venture out to the red dust of the Pilbara. RED DOG deserves to be a legend. We are on a Mission from Dog!
~ Nelson Woss, Producer

Critic Reviews for Red Dog:

- "I was immensely moved by RED DOG, and I can't picture a movie-goer who won't be. It's WONDERFUL!" - ABC Radio

- "Red Dog is a real charmer. A quirky and endearing tale about man's best friend" - Urban Cinefile

- "The dog itself, played by a woofer named Koko, is a great central character, and the humans are good value, too." - At The Movies

- "These days, when the market in family films is so thoroughly dominated by the wonders of CGI, it comes as a cheering surprise to find one that makes such beguiling work out of an idea that goes all the way back to the adventures of Lassie and Rin Tin Tin." - Sydney Morning Herald

- "Red Dog is moving, uplifting and very funny." - FILMINK

Events, Gatherings, Outings » RED DOG - Screening in Golden Village Cinemas from 20th Oct 2011 Oct 11, 2011 10:47 AM (Total replies: 2)

Synopsis:
Night in the mining town of Dampier, Western Australia, a dog lies in the backroom of the town?s only pub, dying. Not just any dog, but the most loved and infamous dog of the entire Pilbara region – Red Dog.

Slowly through the night word spreads and people from the town gather in the pub. Part vigil, part wake, part celebration, they swap stories of Red Dog?s life, his rise to fame, his glories and tragedies.

Red Dog had first hitched a ride into Dampier some ten years earlier with publican Jack and wife Maureen (Noah Taylor and Loene Carmen). At the time, Dampier was more outpost than town and Red Dog?s rangy personality matched the spirit of the land and the colourful characters who came from throughout the world looking for work.

Red Dog endeared himself to (almost) everyone who crossed his path including Peeto (John Batchelor), a large brash man with a surprisingly soft and gentle heart; Vanno (Arthur Angel), an Italian who Red Dog helps find love; and Jocko (Rohan Nichol), a miner with a dark and disturbing past. However, it was not until Red Dog came across John (Josh Lucas) that he settled down.

John - himself a wanderer - took a job in Dampier driving the Hamersley Iron company bus. Red Dog proudly took his place beside his chosen master and the arrangement was a match made in heaven. Even when John?s attention was diverted toward the new girl in town, Nancy (Rachael Taylor), Red Dog held his ground.

But tragically, John?s life was cut short. Red Dog could not accept that John was gone and waited weeks at John?s beach shack in the hope he would return. When John didn?t show, Red Dog set out to find him.

He travelled thousands of miles hitchhiking by car, truck, rail, ship and air. From the south of Perth to the north of Darwin. He even journey to Saganoseki, Japan, and back. And in every town, he searched every face for that of his master. To every person he met it was as if he asked the same question: “Have you seen John?”

Back at the pub, the room has filled with people. Memories of Red Dog come fast and furious: His monumental appetite for food and love, his war with the evil Cribbages, his epic brawls with the giant Red Cat. And how ultimately he spoke to their lonely souls and brought them together as a community in this hot and desolate place.

But Red Dog is not yet ready to die. Unnoticed, he shakily gets off the table in the backroom room and weakly wanders off into the night.
As his friends in the pub realize that he?s gone, they stream out into the dawn calling him to come back, to come home. But Red Dog is already heading towards a final journey, into legend.

Please do not fall for it. Also, there are many wonderful cats locally that you can have as pets, whether you're looking at having pedigree or local pets. There is no need to engage this Cameroon fella.

Just ignore his mails.

Health, Conditions & Diseases » Whether or not to follow vet's advice on amputating leg Aug 24, 2011 04:00 PM (Total replies: 13)
Hi miffies,

11 yrs old is a grand old age for a Maltese and it's really great to know that Miggy has made it this far.

Like the rest here, I would strongly suggest for you to seek a second opinion from a reputable vet. This is because there are really far too many finance-oriented vets in Singapore. The lack of stringent scutiny by authorities and lack of public awareness has led to vets getting away with their actions easily. Unlike in western countries where vets go all the way to treat an animal, some vets here simply recommend the most "straightforward" method, whether or not it is necessary.

Dr. Cathy Chan from The Animal Doctors Pte. Ltd. is good and experienced. I go to her for small animals though. You can check out Shoppe Place or ask fellow dog owners on the vets whom they trust.

Lastly, if amputation is the only resort, do ask the vets on the risks, potential complications and downside of it too, since Miggy is already 11 years old. Also, ask on what are the alternatives available, estimated lifespan, if Miggy does not go for the amputation. A good vet will provide you with both sides of the story instead of pushing solely for the surgery.

Do keep us updated on Miggy's progress.
