New hope for stray dogs? Oct 15, 2012 11:49 AM (Total replies: 12)
This is project ADORE - only 10 dogs adopted under it so far, but hopefully the pilot project is deemed successful and the HDB rules will be changed sooner rather than later. (I can't find a specific website for ADORE, so I don't know when it will be evaluated)
On a related note, there's talk about Chong Pang doing a similar pilot project for cats in HDBs.. to be announced very soon. I think Cat Welfare Society is doing a big event there this weekend for the announcement.
The thing I hate about these HDB rules, apart from the idiotic and counterproductive ban on cats and medium-sized dogs, is that basically, if somebody complains, then the complainant is always right. There's no presumption of innocence, no due process. Just: if somebody complained, then you are guilty and you must get rid of your dog. What about the thousands of people who didn't complain? Why don't we assume they want the opposite of the complainant?

Shiba Inu Singapore Sep 28, 2012 03:03 PM (Total replies: 27)
Can I ask where you got your dogs? I've had a weak spot for Shibas for a while, and have been considering getting one (I already have a golden retriever). I saw one at PetLovers in Holland Village 2 months ago. Here's how the conversation went:
Me: Hi, can you tell me more about that Shiba puppy please? Where's it from etc? Shop assistant: It's from Taiwan. Me: OK. Anything else? Is it from a home breeder or a puppy mill? What kind of conditions was it transported in during the long trip to S'pore? SA: We don't answer those questions. Me: You mean you don't know? Or you don't want to tell me? Do you at least have a family tree for the dog? SA: We do know, but we won't tell you. We'll send you a family tree 3 months after you buy the dog.
At that point I left before doing something I'd later regret (actually I wouldn't have regretted it, but I would have gotten in trouble and not achieved much). So that's why I'm curious where you can get yours.
I've heard you can get them in Japan, but: (a) that would require several trips to Japan before and after the birth to meet the breeder/parents/etc, which would be really expensive (b) I don't think I want a small puppy to go through a 8-hour flight in a dark crate + hours of immigration + weeks of quarantine
Any advice?
Thanks for your help!

Public consultation on animal welfare laws Sep 20, 2012 03:55 PM (Total replies: 2)
Hi all, I just wanted to mention that the government is conducting a public consultation on animal welfare laws. Somebody else mentioned it in another thread, but since there's still 1-2 weeks to go, I thought I'd bring back to people's minds.
Please take the time to answer the questions. I thought the study was very good, and it's our only chance of changing things for the better.

Recommendation for dog grooming service [home] Sep 20, 2012 03:50 PM (Total replies: 109)
I think I posted about this somewhere already, but I have used a guy called Richard who came to groom my dog at my home several times. I thought he was fantastic and definitely recommend him 100%. He doesn't do shampoo though (well maybe he does for small dogs, but he didn't want to tackle my 38kg golden retriever ) but his grooming is excellent.
It's also MUCH better if done at home, vs at a groomers where your dog spends hours in a crappy little cage full of noise, heat and yapping unhappy other victims. It also means I don't spend time and money going back and forth between home and the grooming centre.
I know we're not supposed to advertise too much, but given the 50 requests for PMs, I'll just put his number here: 9009 8745.

Completely agree. There is only upside in expressing your views here. If they are ignored, too bad, but if nobody answers it just shows that the public doesn't care and you may not get a chance to express yourself for years.
And that means the people who don't want any changes to current regulations (puppy mill owners etc) will win, because you can be sure they will be filling out those forms in large numbers, arguing that the pet traders of Singapore are a wonderful bunch of ethically-minded citizens who love animals (as opposed to the shameless scoundrels we know them to be).
It's those with the most to lose who will fight the hardest for the status quo (although I personally think a smart business person should see this as an opportunity to be the leader in a new world where ethical pet breeding is the norm).

Yeah. Also, if you run over a dog and you see the owner screaming and crying, you should really stop and go sort it out, rather than push down some more on the speed pedal.

the cost of puppies bought from a registered breeder in singapore Jul 24, 2012 02:25 PM (Total replies: 72)

Less than $3k. Any reliable pet shop or pet farm? --- Original message by melina_me on Jul 24, 2012 12:14 PM No pet shops here sell animals that have been raised even a tiny bit ethically. No pet farms here raise animals even a tiny bit ethically.
So in that sense, they're all 100% reputable. They all live up to their reputations of treating animals cruelly, not caring whether they're healthy or not, whether they have genetic diseases from breeding family members etc etc etc.
The odds of your pet being sick or traumatised are pretty high if you buy, so I really don't understand why you'd buy over adopting.
In the meantime, just as I was reading this, I got this email from ASD (Action for Singapore Dogs): "Due to the relentless number of halpless and helpless dogs that we have had to take in, we will be holding another adoption drive this weekend ! If you are looking for a dog and are ready for that bundle of joy and commitment, think no more, swing by our event this weekend ! "

Yes, the 5 year old female is the one I saw. The picture has a phone number on it, maybe you can try calling.
And Ran is correct, that other one looks cute.

I definitely saw a Shih Tzu for adoption on one of those FB pages yesterday. Can't remember which one, but it's either SPA or adoptapet.sg.

Recommend a German Shepherd breeder? Jul 12, 2012 01:49 PM (Total replies: 3)
Yeah I regularly see german shepherds up for adoption on the usual channels.
Also, I think the local dogs are very similar to german shepherds in terms of intelligence and behaviour, and even appearance, although they're usually a bit smaller.

Ingen: I have exactly the same problem.
Ran: thanks! I can't believe I didn't find that myself. It's not cheap but I might be tempted to get that... I'm hoping the mesh centre will make it cool enough for him to choose over the tiles.

Ran Edited by ranchu003 on Jul 11, 2012 at 08:58 AM --- Original message by ranchu003 on Jul 10, 2012 07:04 PM Hi Ran, yes if you can find out who carries this kind of bed that would be great. I think if the surface is more like a hamac/net and less continuous, then the dog can still be cool when lying on it... but it still has to be resistant and comfotable. That's probably the main thing, as long as it's still cool + more comfortable than the floor, he'll go there.

I see what you mean. I also have some floor-level beds like that, but he never uses it... maybe sometimes to play or to chew on a toy, but never ever to sleep.... I guess the floor is just much cooler for him.
