iloveflower, i don't think they have such specific items in their list of allergens. More like the usual stuff like fish, dustmites, animal dander, etc. I wanted to test for birdnest, they also don't have. U can call them up and ask, I'm sure they'll be able to advise u better.

Aiyo, she looks so pretty! So sayang to cut it off!

Actually it's ok to keep the long hair when u go for sterilization. I didn't have to cut my silky terrier's hair. The vet need only to shave off some hair at their tummy area, so won't affect the overall look of the dog.

Teddybear-look i think it's like when they were puppies that kind of length. But i really think u should keep her hair long, she really looks beautiful Heart pain to chop all that hair off...

iloveflower, i went to nuh thru reference from the polyclinic. i can't remember the cost but i think it's not expensive.

They'll have a list of common allergens and u'll hve to choose from the list which one u want to test for. What they do is they'll just lightly scratch the surface of the skin with the allergens (no pain at all) and then after a while the skin will sort of raise up in a bump (like a mosuito bite) if u're allergic to the chemical. All the tests are done at the same time. So my boy had like a row of scratches on his arm. I remember that u pay according to the number of things u want to test, something like a few dollars for each. So the more u test for, the more u pay.

This is the basic tests. If u want very specific, or if they don't have the allergen u want to test, then u may have to bring ur own. They'll then do a tolerance test, whereby they'll expose u to the particular allergen a little amount at a time until symptoms appear.

Hope this gives u a rough idea of how it'll be.

nuh usually do the skin-prick test to find what are the allergens but be prepared that the tests may not be conclusive. My kid was tested to be allergic to thousand and one things but actually he's quite fine with them. The one thing that he's really allergic to, they couldn't find what it is Cos for Singapore kids, somehow, majority are sensitive to dust mites, animal dander, etc. but many don't actually react strongly to these allergens.

Maybe, at the moment, best to keep off any strong medicaiton for ur dog like Frontline and also minimize ur girl's contact with the dog temporarily. Allergies sometimes need time to settle, like stop 'irritating' her system, else it'll be worse. After some time, she may be less sensitve to the allergens.

do hang in there

thanks everyone! will try out... guess i'm too soft-hearted towards her

is it too late to teach her now that she's past one yr old?

Behaviour & Play » Puppy Biting Jan 13, 2010 11:49 PM (Total replies: 150)
Mine is 15 mths and still biting!

She'll bring her bone to me and then bite my hand instead of the bone

Tried scolding her, and she'll immediately stop biting and start licking but after a few seconds, as if she can't bear it anymore, she'll bite again. If we smack her mouth, that gets her even more excited thinking we're playing with her. Yelping also doesn't work. Sometimes she also likes to nibble our hands with her front teeth, like mouse gnawing the wood like that.

Usually when she bites, can tell that she's controlling her strength and not biting hard on us. But sometimes when she's too excited, it can be v painful.

I've seen ticks before, looks like tiny "beetles", right? But how do fleas look like?

I don't use anything like Frontline or Revolution, cos i think they're v toxic though they claim to be safe. I only use Virogone spray on my dog whenever i bring her out, it's supposed to repel ticks and fleas.

My groomer recently recommended something even more cool - a tag which emits certain 'magnetic signals' (or something like that) which will 'stun' the ticks n thus prevent them from attaching themselves to your doggy. So there's no chemical toxin at all and the dog only need to wear it like a dog tag on the collar. Cool right? Price is i think 100 plus S$ but the tag can last for a year. Sounds a bit ex for a tiny tag but eventually cost less than Frontline kind of products, plus NO POISON applied to doggy!

Anyone tried it before? I'm seriously thinking of getting one after i finish my bottle of Virogone

Housing, Apparels & Accessories » Dog carrier [cage/bag] for Medium-sized dogs Jan 8, 2010 09:31 AM (Total replies: 11)
i kaypoh again I've not had a spitz before, but had a pomeranian previously. I think their coat quite similar - the powder puff type. I never need to cut her fur, except for the paw pads, ears and the rear area only. As long as u brush them everyday, they'll look beautiful cos the fur will shed periodically, so won't overgrow. Now i have a silky terrier, definitely got to groom!!

btw, i also like the sherpa carriers, the design looks like they've put in a lot of thots to make sure the doggy is comfy

hehe, i just kaypoh abit . i see a lot of pet carriers at Pets Mo Mo, an online pet store. I think u can check them up in the Shoppe Place in this forum. I haven't bought from them personally but they do seem to have a wide range of carriers. I very tempted to get one but my hubby don't allow

Behaviour & Play » He's starting to pee at wrong places. what is happening? Dec 2, 2009 05:10 PM (Total replies: 211)
thank all, for the advise and suggestions.

got a bit of progress with her these few days. tried a few things, finally now we lay newspaper on the floor plus her pee tray. She's been consistently peeing on the newspaper For some reason, she'll poo on the tray but pee on the papers, funny girl!

Quite satisfied with the progress, will slowly try to get her to pee on the tray. Now don't dare to change anything too quickly in case she goes back to peeing on the floor.

i always find that my girl will gobble up any new brand but after eating for 2,3 days, she won't be so keen anymore. Also when i open a new packet of food, she's also more eager to eat, not sure if it's becos it tastes "fresher".

Behaviour & Play » He's starting to pee at wrong places. what is happening? Nov 21, 2009 03:57 PM (Total replies: 211)
whocares,

it's become a regular thing before this, she was very good, 90% on the tray. occasional mistake i can understnd, but now it's always on the floor

very hard to reinforce cos she'll not pee/poo when we're looking at her.

even though it's near the tray, it can be quite frustrating to wake up every morning to face pee flowed all over the floor. somemore cannot scold her anymore since she's not caught 'red-handed'

by the way, my doggy started to pee on the floor instead of the tray after she comes back from the groomer. Is it related? It's the first time she goes for grooming outside, previously the groomer comes to my home.

headache headache! my girl was using her tray very well for months but 2 weeks ago, she started to pee and poo on the floor. At first we thought the tray or the floor not clean properly but after cleaning everything thoroughly, she still refused to do it on the tray. She will go to the balcony where the tray is placed, but will do it on the floor instead.

it's v difficult to catch her in the act cos she's now 14 mths old already, so can hold for very long and she won't pee or poo if we're watching her.

anyone knows why the change of behaviour? any advice?

also, she's still biting us when she plays with us, not vicious but just to get our attention to play with her. Like when she brings her toy to us, instead of just placing the toy in our hand, she'll bite us. We tried making sharp noises, slapping her on her mouth, scolding her but she only gets more excited. How?

Behaviour & Play » What are your furkids diskile/afraid of? Oct 22, 2009 08:37 AM (Total replies: 24)
my previous dog super scared of thunder. She'd hide under the bed once it starts to thundering and nothing could make her come out of her hiding place until the storm is cleared.

My current dog is not afraid of anything! But she dislikes people blowing at her face too. She also doesn't like it when we spray her with the anti-tick spray.

Commands & Trainings » Consolidated Thread for Pee/House Breaking Problems Oct 22, 2009 08:16 AM (Total replies: 738)
try using her own pee instead of the training fluid. i dab a it of her pee on the newspaper, just to get some smell on it. i think works better than training fluid.

I struggled with my dog for a period of time too, what finally helped was when we confined her in my balcony where she's supposed to do her business. When she's consistently going to the tray then we extend her confinement area a little at a time, until she's fully trained.

Some dogs learn it faster than others. Be patient and persevere, they'll learn eventually.
