Hello,

I got my chizer puppy (chi x schnau) 2 weeks ago and the previous owner uses a choke chain on it to walk, i have been using it for 2 weeks but recently i read many bad effects of using a choker (e.g bad for her trachea). but when i tried leashing her to her normal collar and tried walking her today but she wont walk properly and keeps pulling at the leash.

she was well trained to come to the choker and puts it on nicely and she walks well with it but occasionally needs to be corrected. she has no bad association with the choker.

should i continue using the choker? because it seems cruel but she wont walk properly without it...

if you find that there is a need for it then use it. but if you want to change it to a normal collar i suggest you use both at the same time first. so that you still have control over the choker. get a leash with 2 hooks one at each end or just simply two leash. give the puppy some time to get use to the normal collar then slowly stop using the choker, just letting the puppy wear it. then remove it finally when the puppy is familiar and doing well on the normal collar.

If your pup does well on the choker (doesn't tug a lot, etc) then there's no harm sticking with it.
You can try a half-choker collar since you say your pup only needs to be corrected occasionally.

I'm really afraid that her trachea will collapse because my younger sis walks her too and sometimes she may not know how to control the choker so I have changed to a hardness it was tough at the beginning but she is starting to get used to it. Thank god. Thanks alot

Hi,

There're some other type of collar such as 'gentle lead' to correct the walking which you may consider.

If you'll be interested in, do drop me a PM & I can share w u more. Cheers

i agree, it is not right.
use a harness, not a collar. Unless, she is very trained and knows the command 'heel' very well.
I still though will strongly encourage a harness.

I now use half-check collar instead of a normal collar. But the way I use is that at it's tightest setting, it does not choke the puppy, there is still about 3 finger space....

I'm using half check because it hangs loosely on the dog....Unlike collar or harness which stick more closely to the skin...

Using collars to do correction? I seriously dunno how and dun intent to try...

My boy has been solely on a choke collar since 6 months or younger and i have no plans to change that. when the dog walks properly, the choke collar is extremely loose and if the dog tugs, it will tighten. no dog is so stupid to continue tugging if it starts to hurt. so, as long as you don't tug the choke collar when the dog is walking properly, the choke collar is even looser and more comfortable for the dog that a normal collar.

The choke collar is to be used as a training tool, pull once sharply when the dog misbehaves but don't pull with all your strength like the hulk or smth.

Prong/pinch collar is also a great alternative, if you are familiar with it.
