I bought a guinea pig from a pet shop a while back not knowing she was already pregnant. While im not exactly happy that males and females are not separated at the shop, i cant deny that the babies are just freaking adorable.
I noticed that my pig got bigger and bigger and thought shes just eating too much. But her obviously pear shaped body got me suspicious so i held her stomach for a while and to my surprise i felt small little kicks. i was quite worried because shes about 4 months old only and i thought thats too young to be pregnant for a guinea pig but found out later that it was fine.
So my pig gave birth last night. me and my sister were actually still playing with her ard 8pm but when i went back to check at about 1130pm(usually feed them at this time haha), i saw she already gave birth to 2 beautiful babies.
i will greatly appreciate any help on care for newborn pigs and also young new mom. Heres some pics of them enjoy!
Still bloody here.. i guess really juust gave birth! quite sad i missed the process actually
 heres the 2 of them
 solo shots!!
 this one looks like mom
 with mom..so adorable!

The young fellas can be small and soft enuf to squeeze thru grills --- do beware of escapees...also do put another water bottle for the babies to drink from....
Try to supplement the mom with vit c....
And in 3 weeks' time, please determine the sexes and separate the male from the female as they can reproduce by then and inbreeding is a strict no-no....
Congrats.... Edited by bluestasia on Feb 17, 2009 at 02:13 PM

i have already put a smaller water bottle where the babies will be able to reach should they want to drink but so far have not seen them drinking. the mom looks perfectly healthy. i have also been feeding her oxbow vitamin C 200CT daily. and yes there will be no breeding taking place here.
thanx alot!

The mother and the babies can be fed with oxbow alfafa pelets and hay. Cos is much mroe rich and needed by the mother and the babies. minimum for about 1 month then chagne back to timothy hay and pellets.

sorry to hijack this thread, as my situation is about the same as the thread starter.
i got my 2 guinea pig 3mth old from PL last yr Dec, and was told by the vet they were both female, so i thought there will be no mating taking place.
i always noted one of the piggy seems to be bigger size den the other and all along these 3mths i did not notice any mating between them, suddenly last Saturday one of piggy gave birth to a pup~!!~
den i did a thorough and tough check on the piggy which is smaller size and realised his testicles and small penis
and he tried to mate again with bigger piggy few hrs later she had gave birth i quickly seperate them before he got another chance to do so, haa but now they were seperated in 2 diff cages, and i notice the male piggy seems to be abit sad he kept biting the cage seems like wanna to free himself for mating.
1) but i dun wanna breed and also cant afford the time for another small pup around. Is it good to seperate the 2 adults in 2 diff cages permanently or its better to sterilize the male 1? i checked with AAVC and they charged S$110 for male sterlisation thats not cheap, haiii the other cage already cost me quite abit will he be over stressed up? as the female is so near to him yet so far.
2) as for the pup, seems like its starting to take alfafa hay, not pellet though, and it seems not drinkin from the bottle i specially adjust it to lower level for the pup but i guess it prefer sucking from mama. is fine for the pup not drinkin plain water?

I think it's quite good that you separate them ah... I dun think he will be stressed though maybe you could put the two cages side by side letting them see each other so as to interact it's ok ba.
The pup should have enough water from the mum's milk alr, it will probably learned from the mum when it wants to... that's what happened to my chins. They learn from each other.

Maybe you should separate them, until the young one grow bigger enough for you to tell if it's a male or female... Cos if you sterilise the father now, what if the child is male too? Then you sterilise 2??? In that case if you want them to live together then it will be more feasible to sterilise the only female right? If child is female, the father will kana lor...
However, I feel that it's best not to sterilise them, as it carry risk since it's a surgery afterall. If you can just separate them will do... else, give the "unique" sex among the 3 to other adopters.
